GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 This course is designed to educate future clinicians about specific psychotherapy modalities and their application in a clinical setting. These techniques will be taught through the lens of psychiatry but will be applicable to any career in medicine as future physicians work with patients to set care goals. Using didactic sessions, workshops, and 1:1 sessions, participants will learn foundational concepts of psychotherapy modalities such as psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Students will also learn how to apply these techniques in a clinical setting through small group sessions as well as patient interviews. Students will both observe and perform patient interviews and will participate in self-reflection and peer feedback. Students will receive personalized feedback on their performance and ability to apply techniques from different modalities throughout a patient interview.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The time commitment for this elective includes eight sessions (~two hours each) including didactics and workshops to be scheduled around existing obligations such as exams and quizzes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this elective, students should be able to:
- Explain the fundamentals of psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and humanistic psychotherapy. (EPO: MK-4, MK-7, PC-1)
- Discuss the use of techniques from different therapeutic modalities in observed patient interviews. (EPO: PC-6, PC-7)
- Demonstrate how to use techniques from different therapeutic modalities during patient interviews. (EPO: PC-6, PC-7)
METHODS OF TEACHING: lecture, small groups, one-on-one mentoring
METHODS OF EVALUATION AND STUDENT FEEDBACK: Students will apply these skills in practice patient interviews and will evaluate their own performances as well as receive personalized feedback from the course director on these sessions.
PREREQUISITES: Second-year medical student in good academic standing (6 slots) and prior completion of SOMN 642. Students who have not taken SOMN 642, may be permitted to register by faculty approval only.
