Elective Description/Requirements: In this rotation, the student will spend 4 weeks with the Gynecology and Oncology team. The student will have the opportunity to participate in the operating room, in-patient rounds, and deliveries. The student will also have the option of participating in the out-patient clinic.

- List the symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic methods for patients with gynecologic cancers. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Describe the clinical manifestations and rationale for treatment options of gynecologic cancers. (EPOs: MK-4)
- Describe the risk factors for cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer and the appropriate indications for screening. (EPOs: MK-3, PC-1)
- Describe the management of patients with adnexal masses. (EPOs: PC-6)
- Describe the general mechanisms of action of different chemotherapeutic agents. (EPOs: MK-6)
- Describe appropriate preoperative evaluations for individual patients (appropriate imaging, lab tests, antibiotics, DVT prophylaxis, etc.) (EPOs: PC-6)
- Describe postoperative management for diet, ambulation, urinary function, DVT prophylaxis and wound care. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Recognize and describe the evaluation of postoperative complications. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Present daily patient updates including an assessment and management plan. (EPOs: IPC-2)
- Obtain a comprehensive history for patients presenting for gynecologic oncology care. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Perform a daily assessment and develop a plan for postoperative patients. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Discuss the appropriate workup and diagnosis of women with gynecologic malignancies. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Present a complete history, physical exams, differential diagnoses, and rationale for management plan. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-2)
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. (EPOs: IPC-1)
- Participate in evening or weekend clinical care to support continuity of patient care and demonstrate professionalism in varied clinical settings. (EPO: IPC-2)
- Conduct structured patient handoffs using an evidence‑based communication approach to ensure safe and accurate transfer of care. (EPO: SBP-1)
Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Prerequisites: This rotation is only open to 4th year medical students. Application to include a brief essay: In 200 words or less, explain why you are interested in the Riverside OB/GYN Program
Special Notes:
- As part of the acting internship, students are required to participate in at least one evening or weekend clinical experience. Â This experience ensures exposure to the full spectrum of patient care responsibilities and supports readiness for residency-level schedules and work environment.
- Students are expected to participate in structured patient handoffs as part of their clinical responsibilities. Â This includes observing and contributing to the sign-out processes to ensure safe, effective transitions of care.
- Â Required to attend resident didactics.
